So there we were (three couples) in KK. We stayed at the Horizon Hotel since it is in the city and for ease of commuting. Little Italy is just a 5 minutes walk from our hotel. The first night itself we were at the restaurant for dinner, the restaurant was full and we had to queue for our table.
For drinks most of us ordered the lemon juice, freshly squeezed and with just the right mix of tanginess and sweetness.Very refreshing !
We wanted to have a sampling of the food so we decided to share.
For the starter we had Antipasto Misto which is a selection of smoked salmon, roasted peppers, roasted eggplants, grilled zucchini, turkey ham rolls and tuna-stuffed tomatoes, served with garlic bread.A plate cost us RM 26.50. The vegetables were roasted/grilled to perfection and it was an appetising combination to tantalise our taste buds.
We also ordered a bread basket which comprised of a selection of freshly baked bread, still hot from the oven ,including Ciabatta bread, Rustico rolls,Parisette loaf and Corn Kaiser. A plate cost RM 9.90. The breads were so good that I could just eat that and nothing else.
Next we had Insalata di Salmone , a combination of green vegetables, smoked salmon, celery, grilled mushroom, capers, Roma tomatoes and garlic mayonnaise sauce which cost RM 24.50.
An Italian meal would not be complete without pasta and pizza. So for the pasta we ordered linguine with Polpette meat balls which cost RM 22.90.The pasta was homemade and was al dente and the sauce was a right mix of tomatoes and herbs. The meatballs were just of the right tenderness and taste, and melted in the mouth.
The pizza that we chose was Pollo E Funghi which was basic pizza topped with marinated chicken morsels and mushrooms. The pizza was neither too thin nor too thick and was crispy and yet spongy, just the way I like it.
What would a meal be without dessert ? I chose Affogato al Caffe costing RM 12.50 which was a single scoop of Zabaglione Gelato dipped in imported Caffe Cagliari Espresso shot. The combination of the sweetness of the gelato and the bitterness of the espresso left a nice taste on the palate and made me crave for more.
My friend ordered Warm Chocolate Cake costing RM 12.90 which was a chocolate and almond cake served with a portion of Vanilla ice cream.
The other friend ordered Crespella e Gelato which was a Gelato pancake served with chocolate syrup and freshly-whipped cream, costing RM 12.50
What a perfect way to celebrate my birthday - perfect food with my darling husband and close friends !
Since we couldn't be eating the whole time we were in KK, we decided to spent the whole of the next day on Pulau Sapi, one of the islands off the coast of KK, swimming in the crystal clear water, snorkeling, enjoying the beautiful scenery and basking in the sun like a beached whale !
The following day we took a drive out towards Kundasang and Ranau and stopped at Nabalu to get a good view of the majestic Mount Kinabalu .From there we travelled to Poring Hot Spring. The hot spring itself was boring but the dip in the Kipungit waterfall was invigorating and made the trip worthwhile.
By the time we got back to KK we were famished and ready for another scrumptious dinner at Little Italy again !
Again we decided to share. For appetiser we had Frittura Mista di Pesce which is a combination of fresh prawns, calamari, New Zealand stuffed mussels, fish and vegetables ,all breaded and fried, and served with 3 types of dip. The seafood was really fresh and fried to perfection.A plate cost RM 28.00
For salad we had Insalata di Cesare comprising of lettuce, tomatoes, sliced onions, beef bacon, marinated chicken breast tossed with mayonnaise, chopped garlic ,parmesan cheese and olive oil which cost RM 14.90.
Although we have eaten this salad in other restaurants countless times, somehow or other this tasted different.I suspect the sauce must hold a secret ingredient that the chef is not disclosing.
The bread we requested was Schiacciatina which was a stone-baked flat bread, painted with garlic butter and Mediterranean herbs costing RM 8.90 ,served fresh and hot.It was good enough to eat on its own.
Our next menu was Cannelloni di Zucca e Pollo which were three pasta tubes filled with chicken morsels and pumpkin, served in a creamy sauce ( RM 24.90).The taste was amazing. The sponginess of the pasta, the sweetness of the pumpkin and the cheesiness of the sauce made it an effort to resist ordering another plate.
For the pizza we tried the al Salmone Affumicato which was pizza with smoked salmon, capers and onion rings.Again the homemade pastry was superb and the salmon was fresh and tasty.
For pasta we had the beef ravioli with Emiliana sauce ie a combination of Bolognese sauce and cream sauce. The ravioli was very tasty and the taste was enhanced by the beautiful combination of the sauce.
We ended the dinner with Tiramisu which cost RM12.90 per piece.
What a great way to end a great holiday !
